In a powerful step toward building a more resilient and profitable agricultural system, three of Ghana’s leading agritech organizations — Agrisolve, TerraCalco Ghana, and Sesi Technologies — hosted a series of transformative field day events in July 2025, reaching more than 500 smallholder farmers across four communities in the Northern and Upper West Regions.

Held in Tumu and Sakai in the Upper West, and Sang and Sankpala in the Northern Region, the events kicked off the Farmer School Project’s demonstration phase, aimed at restoring soil health, improving input efficiency, and empowering rural farmers with practical, science-based techniques. Transforming Fields into ClassroomsThe field days turned farmlands into outdoor learning spaces. Farmers moved between stations where they engaged in live demonstrations, Q&A sessions, and peer learning discussions.

Extension officers, agronomists, and project staff demonstrated how to collect and interpret soil samples, calculate lime requirements, and apply inputs for maximum impact.
“These demonstrations are opening our eyes,” said Ruth Laadi Issah, a soybean and maize farmer from Tumu. “I now understand why my fertilizer wasn’t working before. The soil was too acidic, and I didn’t know.” Each community’s demo field showcased three plots — full lime, half lime, and no lime (control) — allowing farmers to observe the visual and agronomic differences between treated and untreated soil.

These trials are expected to serve as core references throughout the season. Science on the Ground: Sesi Technologies’ FarmSense InnovationOne of the highlights of the events was the deployment of Sesi Technologies’ FarmSense Rapid Soil Testing System, which enabled real-time assessment of soil health indicators. Field technicians demonstrated how to use the device to test for:Soil pHNitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium (NPK) levelsOrganic matter and moisture contentThese diagnostics were instantly transmitted to a dashboard accessible by extension agents and project leads, and translated into simple fertilizer and lime recommendations that farmers could implement immediately.

“This is the first time we’re bringing digital precision to the village level,” said Emmanuel Kyei, Program Lead at Sesi Technologies. “We’re not only testing soil — we’re teaching farmers how to interpret the results and make smarter, more profitable input decisions.”
Sesi has now established three FarmSense Soil Test Centers at Agrisolve’s GreenConnect hubs, providing ongoing access to soil intelligence throughout the season. With 20 years of expertise in soil amendment, TerraCalco Ghana. provided both the lime — over 50 metric tons of agricultural-grade TerraCalco — and the training to go with it.
Kenneth Danso, General Manager of TerraCalco, led a team of technicians and agronomists who facilitated hands-on lime application protocols, covering:
Lime dosage calculation based on test results
Spreading techniques using local tools
Timing of application relative to planting
Lime integration with tillage and moisture
“We’re not just here to sell lime,” Kenneth emphasized. “We are here to build farmer confidence in soil health. Seeing the difference in a demo field changes how a farmer thinks about their land forever.”
The TerraCalco team also distributed standard application guidelines and safety leaflets, ensuring MoFA and AEAs are properly equipped to support field implementation.

Agrisolve’s Coordination and Vision for Scale
As the lead implementer, Agrisolve Ghana. ensured seamless coordination across all four locations. Their work included mobilizing farmers, deploying demonstration inputs, liaising with local authorities, and managing logistics for the field day events.
Raymond Enye, Agrisolve’s Project Manager, reflected on the turnout and farmer feedback:
“When farmers show up like this and ask tough questions, you know they are ready for change. The goal is not just to demonstrate — it’s to make sure adoption follows. This partnership has created the perfect platform to drive soil health transformation across Ghana.”
Agrisolve’s team, working alongside MoFA regional directors and affiliate AEAs, will continue to monitor crop performance on the demo plots and farmer experimental fields, gathering data and testimonials through harvest.
Field Days as Catalysts for Behavior Change
The field day series follows a strategic four-phase timeline:
Pre-planting (July): Lime application, soil sampling, and training
Vegetative stage (August): Fertilizer protocols and pest management
Mid-season (September): Crop growth monitoring and pH re-assessment
Harvest (October–December): Yield comparisons and farmer reflection
“I was surprised how many young farmers showed up,” said Fuseini Imoro, Agrisolve’s Farmer Service Lead. “It tells us the next generation is hungry for knowledge — and ready to take farming seriously.”

These events also serve as data collection points for both agronomic insights and social behavior tracking, helping partners understand what motivates adoption and what barriers still exist.
With hundreds of farmers now trained, and demonstration fields in full operation, the 2025 Farmer School Project is gathering momentum. Upcoming activities include:
Continued FarmSense testing and reporting
Follow-up field visits by AEAs and technical teams
Development of a joint evaluation brief comparing yields and input efficiency
Final farmer stories and media coverage to document lessons and impact.
The Farmer School Project is building a new model for smallholder resilience in Ghana — one rooted in science, collaboration, and farmer empowerment. Agrisolve and its partners are inviting:
Development organizations/Government Agencies to fund scale-up
Input companies to plug into the Greenconnect network
Media to tell the success stories of Ghana’s new farming frontier
“We have the blueprint. We have the momentum. What we need now are partners who believe in the power of the soil,” Raymond concluded.
