Assistant Lecturer at the University for Development Studies (UDS) and long-serving NDC communicator, Dr. Seidu Mohammed Fitre, has officially declared his intention to contest the upcoming by-election for the Tamale Central Constituency parliamentary seat on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The declaration follows the tragic demise of the late Hon. Alhaji Murtala Mohammed Ibrahim, the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, who passed away alongside seven other distinguished Ghanaians a few days ago. In a heartfelt statement, Dr. Fitre described the late legislator as a mentor and a political father who “put him on the trajectory” he lives today by sending him to represent the NDC at TV3 for the first time. “We lost an excellent comrade in Hon. Murtala, who greatly modeled me into who I am today,” he said, adding that his decision to contest is borne out of the late MP’s faith in youth leadership and passion for communication.
Giving a reflection of his background, Dr. Fitre recounted his humble beginnings in the Hausa Zongo of Tamale Central, his academic journey from Presbyterian Primary, Zogbeli JHS, Vitting SHTS, Tamale Technical University, and UDS, where he now lectures in the Department of Population and Reproductive Health. He highlighted his years of active service to the NDC as a communicator, having featured on major platforms such as TV3, GHOne, Pan African TV, Radio Gold, Kassapa FM, and several Northern-based networks. He also recalled his role as host and manager of the NDC-focused political show Lem Loori on Diamond FM, which ran successfully for over two years.
Touching on his vision for the constituency, Dr. Fitre emphasized that his candidacy is not for personal or family gains, but for the people of Tamale Central, particularly the youth. He pledged to work closely with traditional leaders, religious leaders, and his fellow MPs to foster development through job creation, improved roads, potable water, peace promotion, and enhanced healthcare delivery in the constituency. “I know that the shoes my brother has left behind are ones that no one can fully fit into. However, it is my sincerest intention to serve as close as possible to the legacy he left for us, while charting a legacy of my own,” he said.

While acknowledging that the upcoming by-election would be a keenly contested one, Dr. Fitre maintained that he holds no malice towards any opponent, stressing that his ambition is only driven by love for the NDC and the people of Tamale Central. He further called for unity, prayers, and support from constituents, party members, and well-wishers, assuring them that with Allah’s guidance, he will serve with humility and dedication.
The Electoral Commission has tentatively scheduled the Tamale Central by-election for Tuesday, September 30, 2025, pending an official declaration from the Speaker of Parliament.
