In a heartfelt moment that has stirred emotions across Northern Ghana, popular radio presenter Hawa Kulu broke down in tears during a live interview on Zaa Kootu program on Zaa TV Ghana with Kawastone. The usually bold and outspoken host of a sex education program on Radio Tamale could not hold back her pain when asked about the challenges she faces for hosting such a show in a deeply conservative region.

Fighting through tears, Hawa Kulu revealed that this was the first time anyone had cared to ask her how she truly feels about the backlash she receives. “They call me a prostitute, a hook-up girl, and many other terrible names,” she said with visible pain. “But all I’m doing is educate the youth and the public on something very important—something that affects our health, our marriages, and our lives.

Her program, which focuses on sex education and reproductive health, has often been the subject of criticism due to strong religious and cultural beliefs in the region. But Hawa Kulu made it clear that her intentions are pure and guided by purpose. She explained that she personally consulted three respected Islamic scholars who assured her that Islam does not prohibit educating the public on such matters—as long as the intention is clean and not immoral.

“I needed that spiritual clarity because I’m a Muslim too,” she said. “And all three scholars I spoke to confirmed that what I’m doing is not haram if I’m doing it with a pure heart to educate, not to corrupt.”
