Popular Ghanaian social media influencer, Nash Iddi has issued a strong caution to mainstream media outlets, particularly those in Northern Ghana, regarding their growing obsession with social media trends.
In a recent Facebook post, he warned that attempting to compete with social media in the race for trending topics could have dire consequences, especially when sensitive religious and ethnic issues are involved.
“Mainstream media should not try to outcompete social media in terms of news and trends. That’s a dangerous path to follow. Issues regarding religion and ethnicity are quite volatile, and the media should not try to create trending news headlines around them,” Nash Iddi stated.
He further stressed that media houses operating in regions with a history of religious and ethnic tensions must exercise greater caution in their programming choices. His remarks come in response to the noticeable shift in focus among many media stations in Northern Ghana, which have seemingly abandoned positive and informative content in favor of sensational discussions and interviews with social media influencers and viral internet personalities.
Many observers believe this approach could undermine responsible journalism, fuel unnecessary controversies, and even escalate tensions in a region that has previously witnessed ethnic and religious conflicts. Nash Iddi’s message serves as a timely reminder that while social media thrives on fast-paced, unfiltered discussions, traditional media carries the responsibility of maintaining credibility, professionalism, and social harmony.
As the competition for audience engagement intensifies, his call for caution and ethical journalism could not have come at a better time.
