Maxwell Aburiya, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team, has explained his decision to remain with the party despite earlier promising to resign if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia lost the 2024 presidential election.
Speaking to A1 Radio, Mr. Aburiya attributed the NPP’s electoral defeat to internal voter apathy rather than a rejection by the broader Ghanaian electorate.
He argued that the party’s failure was not due to its policies or candidates but the disengagement of its own members during the polls.
“I pledged to resign if Dr. Bawumia lost, but upon reflection, I realized that this loss is a wake-up call for us to rebuild internally, not abandon ship,” he stated.
Last year, Mr. Aburiya made headlines with his bold vow to quit politics if the NPP failed to retain power.
His recent clarification has sparked mixed reactions, with some questioning his commitment to his word, while others commend his dedication to revitalizing the party.
The NPP now faces significant challenges in addressing internal divisions and reinvigorating its support base ahead of future elections. Mr. Aburiya maintains that his focus will be on ensuring party unity and grassroots mobilization.
